At FlatPanel Audio, our tuning file sets are organized into 2-Way and 3-Way configurations. These terms do not refer to the physical number of subwoofer cabinets in a room; rather, they describe how many distinct subwoofer channels/voicing profiles are used to form a complete full-range audio channel.
2-Way Configurations (DML500 / DML500A + 1 Subwoofer Profile)
In a 2-Way configuration, the full-range DML500/500A operates alongside a single subwoofer tuning profile handling all low-frequency (LF) duties.
-
Signal Routing: One full-range output channel per DML500 + one subwoofer output channel
-
Physical Deployment: You can deploy a single mono subwoofer or multiple subwoofers of the same model (one per output channel) depending on your needs
3-Way Configurations (DML500 / DML500A + 2 Subwoofer Profiles)
In a 3-Way configuration, the low-frequency workload is shared across two distinct subwoofer tuning profiles (one amplifier channel per subwoofer.) Typically one compact subwoofer and one high-output subwoofer.
-
Signal Routing: One full-range output channel per DML500 + two distinct subwoofer channels each driving a different model of subwoofer, each handing a part of the low frequency voicing.
-
Frequency Coverage: Rather than splitting the LF spectrum into strict, isolated bands, the two subwoofer profiles deliberately overlap in the low-end region to build maximum acoustic energy and headroom where live sound demands it most.
-
Physical Deployment: A 3-Way configuration requires assigning LEA amplifier channels to both the primary and secondary subwoofer profiles, regardless of how many total physical cabinets are connected to those channels.
