FlatPanel Audio offers Distributed Mode Loudspeakers in two models: the DML500 (fully encased and protected) and the DML500A (the bare driver for integration into custom millwork and built-in installations). Both models have the same sonic performance, and power handling.

What is the proper use of each DML model?

The DML500 is by far the most widely used model. DML500 is a DML loudspeaker fully enclosed in a cast-aluminum case, including a steel perforated grille. The grille (and grille cloth) protects the carbon fiber from receiving impact damage and dust/debris leakage through the front and rear. In the case of the rear grille cloth, it provides a means to prevent dust and particles from entering into the rear of the DML module where the exciters are housed (over time, dust can accumulate and impair the exciters). The DML500 is aesthetically pleasing, with a stylish case designed to look modern when installed, and provide adequate protection for normal use. (DML500W takes the protection to another level, limiting water and dust intrusion while retaining a pleasing look.)

In contrast, the DML500A is simply the DML module sold as a stand-alone transducer. Imagine a large 12" driver (the DML500A is just that: it's a bare driver). In most cases integrators would not install a bare 12" driver in a wall or hanging from an open ceiling, for many valid reasons. In fact,  DML500A has other considerations that make it much less desirable for open-air installation than the mentioned 12" driver. Specifically, the "exciters" (think of them as the "voice coils" for the DML) do not have traditional "dust caps" in their design (as would the 12" driver) and there are vent holes in the voice coil that will allow dust and particles to get into the tiny air gap around the voice coil (an even tighter tolerance air gap exists in DML exciters than exists in the 12" example driver.)

Since there's no front and rear protection on the DML500A, it's important that it be mounted in such a way as to be either completely out of harm's way with both impact and dust covering, or otherwise encased in custom millwork to provide protection. The DML500A was intended to be installed behind custom millwork and grille material, to provide a hidden, highly integrated look for highly aesthetic locations. The DML500A was not designed to be a visible device, it is a functional device of which the intent was for it to be "heard and not seen". The casting of the DML500A basket is a rough casting, without the polishing and finish work that is applied to the DML500 case to make it aesthetically pleasing. The powder coat finish on the DML500A is simply a protection coat for the bare aluminum. While some like the look of the raw carbon fiber, it is important to note that the front face of the DML500 should be covered with a rigid grille if there's any chance of impact, or if no impact concern, a grille cloth and enclosing millwork.

Installing the DML500A in open space

We have run across a DML500A installed in open-air, please note that this is not an authorized and recommended method for DML500A installation. If a custom enclosure or custom millwork is not involved, the DML500 should be chosen instead (if space is a constraint, DML500A can be used, but front and rear grille coverings and millwork should be employed as mentioned above.) The DML500 has the aesthetic finish, as well as front and rear dust protection to keep it functioning for years without maintenance (dust will eventually make it into the exciters of a DML500A hung without an enclosure. DML500A was never intended to be installed without an enclosure, and so if a custom enclosure is not intended, the DML500 should be chosen.

Cost considerations

There may be a tendency to choose the DML500A based on cost and we recommend against this for the reasons mentioned above. Do we foresee a way to encapsulate the DML500A from its environment in the future? Quite possibly. However for now, and for the best longevity of install for your customer, please consider the DML500. If your project has cost constraints, please be sure to factor into your pricing the cost of protecting the DML500A, if hung in open space.

Warranty considerations

The DML500A product is intended for installation in an enclosure or custom millwork. Since the product was not designed or intended to be operated without an enclosure, if product are installed without an enclosure, FlatPanel Audio may be unable to honor any warranty claims.

If you are unsure about your particular application, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to advise you!
